Tulsa World Scene Writer Jimmie Tramel explored over 54 years of history within the walls of the Cox Business Center Arena  in a front page story, and then invited long-time staff members and readers to share their unique history and memories of the space in a Sunday Scene front page feature. After Jimmie got Tulsa talking, the social media comments kept coming in and each comment was about personal memories -first concert, first date, first professional sporting event- and local television stations came to the venue to share the stories with viewers.

Convention Center Arena to be transformed into ballroom at Cox Business Center

Fans turn out in force for Avett Brothers, final concert at Convention Center Arena

As Tramel noted in his article on the final concert in the Arena, every ending has a beginning:

“The transformation from arena to ballroom will begin in July, according to Cox Business Center Assistant General Manager Kerry Painter, who, in an interview last month, described the change as sad but exciting.

“It’s a little sad because the whole town has all these amazing memories of this room,” she said.

Among those in attendance was Bennett Wilson, a 3-year-old from Edmond. Clutching a stuffed turtle, he tagged along with his grandpa and his parents for his first concert experience. Even a last concert is someone’s first.”
